Just when you thought you had finally worked out retinol, peptides, ceramides and hyaluronic acid, skincare has handed us another acronym: PDRN.
It has been appearing everywhere lately, particularly in Korean skincare, "salmon DNA" serums, regenerative treatments and products promising healthier, firmer, more youthful-looking skin. The claims can sound impressive. Skin repair. Better elasticity. Fewer wrinkles. Improved hydration. Regeneration. So naturally, the question is:
Does PDRN skincare actually work, or are we looking at another ingredient enjoying its 15 minutes of beauty fame?
The answer is somewhere in the middle. PDRN has a legitimate history in regenerative medicine, and growing evidence supports its use in skin rejuvenation. But much of the strongest research involves medical or injectable applications rather than an ordinary serum applied at home.
Topical PDRN skincare is promising. It just deserves slightly more realistic expectations than social media sometimes gives it. Let's unpack it.
What Is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide.

Well, sort of. But probably not in the way you're imagining. "Salmon DNA" has become the catchy description because it sounds considerably more interesting than polydeoxyribonucleotide. PDRN can be produced from highly purified DNA fragments obtained from species such as salmon or trout.
The finished cosmetic ingredient isn't a piece of fish, and your serum isn't going to smell like a seafood counter. The DNA material goes through extraction and purification processes before being incorporated into suitable formulations. There is also increasing research into alternative sources and production methods for PDRN, so salmon-derived PDRN isn't necessarily the only version we'll see in future skincare products.

You'll often see PDRN and PN (polynucleotides) used almost interchangeably. They're related, but they're not necessarily identical. Both are DNA-derived materials composed of nucleotide chains. Broadly speaking, PDRN tends to refer to shorter DNA fragments, while PN can refer to longer chains with different molecular characteristics.
The terminology hasn't always been used consistently—even within scientific literature—which is one reason the subject can become confusing very quickly. For the average skincare shopper, the important takeaway is:
Don't assume every product labelled PDRN, PN or "salmon DNA" contains exactly the same ingredient in exactly the same form. Molecular size, concentration, source, formulation and delivery system can all matter.
PDRN Skincare vs PDRN Injections: This Is Important
This is probably the most important part of the entire article. A lot of excitement around PDRN skincare comes from research and clinical experience involving injectable PDRN or polynucleotide treatments. With injections, the material is delivered directly into the skin.
A serum has to travel through the skin's outer barrier. Those are not equivalent situations. The skin is extremely good at keeping things out. That's one of its main jobs. So you shouldn't look at impressive results from injectable PDRN treatments and automatically assume that a PDRN cream from your bathroom shelf will produce the same effect.
This has been one of the big unanswered questions around topical PDRN: Can enough of it actually reach where it needs to go?
Does Topical PDRN Actually Penetrate the Skin?
This is where research is beginning to get particularly interesting. A 2026 study investigated a specific medium-length topical PDRN preparation in photodamaged skin.
Researchers examined its behaviour in laboratory models, reconstructed skin and human testing. They reported evidence of PDRN-associated signals reaching viable epidermal regions and also conducted a small randomised split-face clinical study using a 0.1% PDRN eye cream.
Over 28 days, that particular formulation produced encouraging improvements in measures including periocular wrinkles and skin structure, with good tolerability.
That's genuinely interesting evidence for topical PDRN. But there's a reason I'm emphasising "that particular formulation." One successful PDRN delivery system doesn't prove that every serum with PDRN written on the bottle will behave the same way.
Molecular size matters. Concentration matters. Delivery technology matters. The overall formulation matters. That's why topical PDRN is probably best described right now as promising rather than universally proven.
Is PDRN Better Than Retinol?
Not so fast. Retinoids have decades of research behind them and remain among the most established topical ingredients for visible photoageing. PDRN is much newer territory, particularly in topical cosmetics.
Interestingly, the recent topical PDRN study mentioned above compared its specific PDRN eye formulation with retinol and reported very encouraging results. But one study isn't enough to announce that PDRN has defeated retinol and taken its crown.
Retinol still has a much larger body of evidence. Where PDRN becomes particularly interesting is for people looking for a different approach to skin ageing and recovery, especially if aggressive actives aren't what their skin needs.
The two ingredients don't necessarily have to be enemies either. Skincare isn't a boxing match.
PDRN vs Peptides
This comparison makes a little more sense because both ingredients are often marketed around skin firmness, repair and ageing. But they work differently.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids—the building blocks of proteins.
PDRN consists of DNA-derived nucleotide fragments.
Both are broad categories rather than one single ingredient, and the effectiveness of either depends heavily on the specific material and formulation being used. Peptides currently have a much longer history in everyday cosmetic skincare. PDRN is the newer, more experimental player. You don't necessarily need to choose between them. In fact, we're increasingly likely to see skincare formulas containing both.
PDRN vs Hyaluronic Acid
These ingredients aren't really doing the same job. Hyaluronic acid is primarily valued in cosmetic skincare for hydration. It acts as a humectant, helping attract and retain water.
PDRN is being investigated more for its regenerative and skin-repair potential. So if your main concern is straightforward dehydration, you don't suddenly need to throw away your hyaluronic acid because PDRN is trending. A product containing both may actually make more sense. Hyaluronic acid handles hydration. PDRN brings the more experimental regenerative angle.
Who Might Be Interested in PDRN Skincare?
PDRN may be worth exploring if your skincare priorities include:

Is PDRN Good for Sensitive Skin?
Potentially, but this depends heavily on the formulation. Look at the supporting ingredients. A formula combining PDRN with proven skincare ingredients may offer more practical value than one relying entirely on the novelty of PDRN.
Consider the source. If animal-derived ingredients matter to you, check whether the PDRN is salmon-derived or comes from another source.
Be suspicious of miracles. If a serum claims to regenerate your entire face in three days... Perhaps keep scrolling.
Do You Actually Need PDRN in Your Skincare Routine?

No. And that's not an insult to PDRN. You don't need peptides either. Or vitamin C. Or a shelf containing seven different serums. A strong skincare routine still starts with the basics:
Cleanse appropriately.
Keep your skin moisturised.
Use sun protection.
Then add targeted ingredients according to what you're actually trying to achieve. If your current routine is working beautifully, there's no urgent reason to rebuild it because PDRN is trending. But if you're interested in skin ageing, texture, elasticity and regenerative skincare, PDRN is certainly one of the more interesting emerging ingredients to watch.

But we're not at the point where every bottle labelled PDRN deserves an automatic place in your routine. The biggest issue is that much of the established evidence comes from professional, medical or injectable applications, while ordinary topical skincare presents a completely different delivery challenge.
So I'd put PDRN in the category of: Worth watching. Worth trying if the formula is good. Not worth abandoning your entire skincare routine for.
That's considerably less exciting than: "Salmon DNA will reverse ageing." But it's probably much closer to the truth.
